Mobile Irrigation Lab

Since 2016, the Coastal San Luis Resource Conservation District has provided free irrigation evaluations to producers through our Mobile Irrigation Lab (MIL). Using an evaluation model developed by Cal Poly’s Irrigation Training & Resource Center, our trained MIL technicians assess the Distribution Uniformity (DU) of individual irrigation systems, providing producers with valuable insights into how evenly water is applied across their fields or production landscape. Improving DU can result in numerous benefits, including:

  • Enhanced crop health
  • Savings on water, energy, fertilizer, and pesticide costs
  • Reductions in runoff and pollution potential
  • Eligibility for incentive programs and regulatory compliance

Through this service, we work collaboratively with growers to offer practical recommendations for improving irrigation efficiency. We also provide technical assistance to help producers identify and apply for grants that promote long-term water conservation. Participation in this program is voluntary, confidential, and non-regulatory, making it a supportive approach to water conservation.
